NOTES ON MAKING OF PARIVU DURING THE LOCKDOWN: I wrote the script over a weekend. My inspiration was the tireless effort by doctors and nurses to save the lives of affected patients. For my audition call for the leading role, 8 candidates responded. Harini Jayalaxmi had no acting experience, but I selected her because she matched the character better than others.
The fact that I live in Chennai while Harini was in Coimbatore made it more challenging. I arranged for the shoot in her house. Vishalini, Harini’s best friend agreed to shoot the video using her mobile, Poco f2. Since Vishalini was not used to shooting videos, I gave her detailed story board and explained each shot. During shooting, I guided her with a video call. She transferred the clips to me and I started editing the film on my laptop.
Harini dubbed her voice in a recording studio in Coimbatore, again a first time experience for her. The male voice actors were in Chennai and they recorded their dialogue on their mobile at their home. Balaji Rajashekar who gives the voice for the Doctor-husband, is a veteran Film and TV actor! He is a visiting faculty at Mirage Film Institute teaching Dubbing and Acting. I am lucky that he is also my close friend and well-wisher for over 10 years.
Sound design was done my good friend Karun Prasad in his studio in Cochin. Original music created by Music Director Stephen Royal in his studio in Santhome.
I edited everything together to create the final output of PARIVU.
***** All the components of the film were done remotely. Though it has a few faults and short comings, I am happy with the end product. I made this short film just to show my Direction students that they can create a film remotely even during a total lockdown.
